JP Dutta’s ‘Border’, released in 1997, was based on the events of Battle of Longewala during the India-Pakistan War of 1971. Boasting of a star-studded cast of Sunny Deol, Suniel Shetty, Akshay Khanna, Jackie Shroff, Pooja Bhatt, Tabu, Kulbhushan Kharbanda,Puneet Issar, among others, the film was one of the highest grossing films of that year. The film also managed to bag three National Film Awards – Best Film on National Integration, Best Lyricist for Akhtar, and Best Playback Singer (Male) for Hariharan (“Mere Dushman, Mere Bhai”).
On the occasion of the 27th anniversary of ‘Border’, JP Dutta had a talk with Zoom where he recalled the shooting days of his war epic. “There was a lot of junoon and passion behind that film. Although we didn’t have the financial resources of international war epics Dunkirk or 1917, we made it exactly the way we wanted to without compromise. All the actors Sunny Deol, Akshaye Khanna, Tabu, Pooja Bhatt, etc were fiercely dedicated. They spent months in locations where there were no amenities, forget luxury hotels”, said the veteran filmmaker.
Meanwhile, the official release date of ‘Border 2’ is yet to be announced.
