In a significant development in the NFL, the Green Bay Packers have released their star running back, Aaron Jones. This decision comes after the Packers signed free agent running back Josh Jacobs, marking a major shift in the team’s backfield.

Jones, who was due $12 million for the 2024 season, was informed of his release after contract talks between him and the Packers broke down. The 29-year-old had spent his entire career with the Packers, having been drafted by the club in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of UTEP.

During his tenure with the Packers, Jones proved himself to be one of the more versatile backs in the league. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2020 and was the co-leader for rushing touchdowns (16) back in 2019. Despite being hampered by injuries in 2023, Jones was extremely productive when on the field, rushing for over 100 yards in the final five games of Green Bay’s season, including its two playoff games.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst expressed his gratitude towards Jones, stating, “We want to thank Aaron for his unwavering commitment to the Packers and the community over the past seven seasons. It is certainly one of the hardest decisions we’ve had to make in my time with the Packers and not one taken lightly. He has not only had a significant impact on the field and in the locker room, but he is one of the most beloved players in the community. We wish nothing but the best for Aaron and his entire family moving forward.”

As the Packers move forward with Jacobs as their lead option, the question remains as to where Jones will land next. Regardless of where he ends up, his contributions to the Packers will not be forgotten.
