Delhi Universities Plan Weekend Classes, Shorter Breaks Due to CUET UG Result Delays, NTA Re-test

15 July 2024, NEW DELHI: In response to delayed admissions caused by the uncertain declaration of CUET UG results, leading universities in Delhi, including Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi University (DU), are set to implement measures such as weekend classes and reduced winter breaks.

NTA Announces CUET Re-test

The National Testing Agency (NTA) announced on Sunday that over 1,000 CUET UG candidates will undergo a re-test on July 19. This decision followed numerous complaints about issues such as time loss due to the distribution of incorrect question papers. Despite this, the NTA has yet to provide a new date for the result declaration, originally scheduled for June 30 and now delayed by over two weeks. The final answer key for the CUET UG is also pending.

Impacts on Academic Calendars

JNU:

A senior JNU official expressed concern over the impact of the delay on the university’s academic calendar. Plans to release a unified calendar for all student batches will likely be affected. To compensate, they might introduce extra classes on Saturdays and shorten the winter break. “Instead of a five-day week, we may need to extend to six days, utilizing Saturdays to cover the syllabus,” the official stated. “We planned a unified academic calendar to streamline the admission process post-COVID-19 disruptions, but clarity will come once result dates are announced.”

Ambedkar University:

Vice Chancellor Anu Singh Lather of Ambedkar University shared a similar strategy, planning extra classes during evenings and weekends and reducing holidays if necessary. “The delay is around two weeks, which is manageable with some extra effort. Originally, first-year sessions were set to start on August 1. If results are delayed beyond two weeks, we’ll adjust by holding evening classes and reducing holidays,” Lather said.

Delhi University (DU):

DU officials indicated that the delay would extend the academic calendar for first-year students, while the schedule for others remains unchanged, with classes commencing on August 1. Registrar Vikas Gupta confirmed that the university had already notified a shortened winter break of four days for second-year students, though no reason was provided for this adjustment.

Other Universities’ Responses

IP University:

According to Vice Chancellor Mahesh Verma, the delay won’t significantly impact IP University’s admission process. The university primarily uses a national-level entrance test for professional courses and its own in-house exams. “We finalize CUET admissions towards the end, by which time the scores should be available, ensuring our process remains unaffected,” Verma explained.

Jamia Millia Islamia:

There has been no immediate comment from Jamia Millia Islamia, which also uses CUET scores for some undergraduate courses. However, like JNU and IP University, Jamia maintains a mixed admission process involving both national and in-house entrance exams.

With these adjustments, Delhi’s leading universities aim to mitigate the disruptions caused by the delayed CUET UG results, ensuring students can commence their academic journey with minimal hindrance. The proactive measures underscore the institutions’ commitment to maintaining educational standards and providing a seamless learning experience despite external challenges.

The final confirmation of schedules and additional classes will depend on the timely announcement of the CUET UG results, anticipated in the coming weeks. For more details visit official website.
