DUSU Vice President Faces Potential Ouster Amid Vandalism Allegations, Investigation Underway

NEW DELHI, July 17, 2024: The Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) has taken a decisive step towards ousting its vice-president, Abhi Dahiya, following allegations of vandalism. The Executive Committee unanimously passed a proposal on Tuesday to remove Dahiya from his position, a decision now pending before the Central Council and a meeting of various student union presidents for final approval.

The controversy erupted after the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) accused members of the Congress-affiliated National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), including Dahiya, of ransacking the DUSU office on the North Campus. The ABVP claims that those involved in the vandalism had consumed alcohol in Dahiya’s office, substantiating their accusations with a video showing empty bottles and damaged office spaces.

Dahiya has not yet responded to these allegations. The proposal to remove him was presented by DUSU vice-president Tushar Dedha from the ABVP. In response to these events, Delhi University has formed a four-member committee, led by Proctor Rajni Abbi, to investigate the matter thoroughly. This committee is expected to deliver its findings within a week.

NSUI Counters Claims

In a statement, the NSUI has denied the allegations and countered by accusing the ABVP of causing the destruction in Dahiya’s office. An FIR has been registered, and the investigation is ongoing.

The outcome of this investigation and the subsequent decision by the Central Council will determine Dahiya’s future within the student body. This incident has sparked significant attention and debate within the university community, reflecting broader tensions between the student organizations involved.
