NEW DELHI, August 9, 2024 – The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi is poised to mark a significant milestone with its 55th Annual Convocation on August 10, 2024. This prestigious event will not only honor over 2,600 graduates but also showcase the institution’s commitment to research, diversity, and global outreach.

Record-Breaking Research Output

IIT Delhi Director, Professor Rangan Banerjee, announced a remarkable 35% increase in PhD graduates compared to the previous year. “We’re awarding 475 doctoral degrees this year, which underscores our growing emphasis on cutting-edge research,” Prof. Banerjee stated. “Notably, 42% of our graduating PhD students are women, reflecting our commitment to gender diversity in advanced studies.”

Diverse and Inclusive Graduating Class

The Class of 2024 exemplifies IIT Delhi’s dedication to inclusivity:

  • 25% of all graduates are women
  • 28 international students from countries including Sudan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, USA, and Venezuela
  • Age range spanning from a BTech graduate under 20 to a 63-year-old PhD recipient

Expanding Academic Horizons

For the 2024-25 academic year, IIT Delhi introduces three innovative programs:

  1. M.A. in Culture, Society, Thought (Department of Humanities and Social Sciences)
  2. M.Sc. in Biological Sciences (Kusuma School of Biological Sciences)
  3. Executive MBA (Department of Management Studies)

“These new programs reflect our commitment to interdisciplinary education and our response to evolving industry needs,” Prof. Banerjee explained.

Global Outreach and International Collaboration

IIT Delhi’s international appeal continues to grow. In the 2023-24 academic year, 44 international students enrolled in postgraduate programs, with 10 pursuing PhDs and 34 in master’s courses.

Degrees & Specializations

The convocation will award degrees across various programs including PhD, MBA, MS (Research), M.Des., M.Tech, Master of Public Policy, PG D.I.I.T. (Naval Construction), Joint PG Diploma in VLFM, D.I.I.T. (PG), M.Sc., B.Tech, and Dual degree programs.

This year marks the first graduates in two undergraduate programs:

  • B.Tech. in Materials Engineering
  • B.Tech. in Engineering and Computational Mechanics

Additionally, four new postgraduate programs will see their inaugural graduates:

  • M.Tech. in Machine Intelligence and Data Science
  • M.Tech. in Biomolecular and Bioprocess Engineering
  • M.S.(R) in Transportation Safety and Injury Prevention
  • M.S.(R) in Automotive Research and Tribology

Distinguished Chief Guest

Hari S. Bhartia, Founder and Co-Chairman of the Jubilant Bhartia Group and an alumnus of IIT Delhi (1979 batch, B.Tech. Chemical Engineering), will grace the occasion as the Chief Guest.

As IIT Delhi prepares for this momentous event, it reaffirms its position as a leading center for technological education and research in India.
