The Indian Men’s Cricket team will begin their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign in a Group A clash against the associate nation Ireland on Wednesday. Rohit Sharma & Co. will look to have a flying start at this tournament, as they eye to bring back a world trophy which has been evading them since the Champions Trophy win back in 2013.
India’s opening match against Ireland will take place at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. They are placed in Group A alongside arch rivals Pakistan, Ireland, Canada and host nation USA. This tournament also happens to be the last outing of the Head Coach Rahul Dravid, as he’s slated to leave Team India’s position after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup.
Team India had very little to prepare for this T20 World Cup happening in the American shores, especially after coming on the back of a long and tedious IPL 2024 season, which concluded less than two weeks back. However, India muscled their way to victory in the sole warm up match against Bangladesh last Saturday, where they beat their rivals comprehensively by a margin of 60 runs.
The 2024 T20 World Cup could also mark the last outing for skipper Rohit Sharma in a world tournament. At 37, he’s unlikely to play in the next T20 World Cup in 2026 slated to happen in India and Sri Lanka. It remains to be seen if this revelation, along with the fact that this is Dravid’s last stint as the head coach, could propel Team India to World Cup glory or not.
