GHAZIABAD, July 22, 2024 — The Delhi-UP-Haridwar highway is undergoing significant traffic changes starting today to accommodate the Kanwar Yatra, a major annual pilgrimage. The traffic diversion plan was implemented at midnight on Sunday, with heightened security measures enforced by Ghaziabad and Muzaffarnagar police. These changes aim to manage the massive influx of pilgrims and ensure smooth transit during the yatra period.

Kanwar Yatra Traffic Diverted in Delhi to Meerut rerouted via Ghaziabad

  • Route Diversions:
    • Heavy commercial vehicles from Delhi to Meerut are rerouted via Ghaziabad to Hapur, then Kithor, Mawana Road, and Ramraj to Muzaffarnagar, Uttarakhand, and Saharanpur.
    • Roadways buses from Dehradun, Rishikesh, and Haridwar to Delhi will follow new routes, bypassing the congested highway areas.
  • Bus Stand Relocations:
    • Haridwar Transport Corporation has established three temporary bus stands at Chandighat, Motichur, and Rishikul Ground to handle the increased traffic.
    • Dehradun-Rishikesh route buses will operate from Motichur, while Bijnor-Najibabad route buses will start from Chandighat. Roorkee, Muzaffarnagar, and Delhi route buses will depart from Rishikul grounds.
  • Heavy Vehicle Restrictions:
    • Ghaziabad police will halt trucks and other heavy vehicles with capacities of 10 tires and above on NH-58, redirecting them through alternate routes to avoid congestion and ensure safety.

The Kanwar Yatra, an annual pilgrimage dedicated to Lord Shiva, sees millions of devotees, known as Kanwariyas, travel on foot to collect holy water from the Ganges and offer it at Shiva temples in their hometowns. The increased number of pilgrims necessitates these extensive logistical arrangements.

  • The diversion plan commenced at midnight, with heightened police vigilance in Ghaziabad and Muzaffarnagar.
  • Temporary bus stands in Haridwar will reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.
  • Special Kanwar Mela trains will run from Monday, with additional coaches and stops to accommodate the influx of pilgrims.

SP Traffic Meerut, Raghavendra Kumar Mishra, stated, “The route diversion plan is essential to manage the massive number of pilgrims and ensure their safety. We have made complete arrangements to facilitate smooth traffic flow and prevent any incidents.”

The Kanwar Yatra has grown significantly in recent years, requiring comprehensive traffic and security measures. The diversion plan ensures that both pilgrims and regular commuters face minimal disruptions. This year, the measures are more stringent due to the increasing number of participants and the need for efficient traffic management.

The traffic diversions and special arrangements aim to provide a safer and more efficient pilgrimage experience. By redirecting heavy vehicles and establishing temporary bus stands, the authorities hope to reduce congestion and prevent accidents, ensuring a smooth journey for millions of Kanwariyas.

The Kanwar Yatra traffic management plan demonstrates a coordinated effort by the police and transport authorities to handle one of the largest religious gatherings in the region. These measures highlight the importance of logistical planning and community cooperation in managing large-scale events.
