Singer and actor Saba Azad has been working in the voice-over industry for over a decade. Almost dubbing over six to seven ads every month, she has been a prolific part of the industry. However, according to her recent insta stories things seem different behind the scenes.
The acclaimed artist posted on her insta story“ I woke up one day and realized hey it’s been months since iv recorded…” according to her ”…something didn’t add up”. Rightly so, how can an accomplished artist with over 200 ads to show her mettle can suddenly stop getting any work?
Saba Azad came into limelight again when it was reported that she is dating Hrithik Roshan. One would suspect she must have started demanding more money due to her increased fame. She further clarified on this on her insta stories, she wrote “I never told anyone im quitting, never said im disinterested, I never altered my sessions fee, nothing was different from my end so what changed?”.
She got the answer to this riddle when she bumped into one of the directors that she had worked with. “..he said-”oh we just thought you wouldn’t like to do something like a voice-over anymore..given” well you can imagine what was implied-”. Her relationship with a more popular celebrity somehow gave this skewed idea to the people of industry that she would not need to work anymore.
“..-in short he said he didn’t think I would do a job like a VO given where you are in life..ie who I am dating” she added. This is another example of the engraved patriarchal thinking that we all live in between. What was more shocking as her insta story revealed is that this specific individual is one of the most progressive and chill people she knows. This further highlights how we can unintentionally fall into a regressive perspective.
Saba clarified on this, “For the uninitiated when two strong independent individuals come together they don’t give up their lives and careers to do so. They hold to their individuality and share from a place of freedom and strength.” She ended with a question “Are we really still living in the dark ages where we assume a woman in a relationship with a successful partner no longer has to put food at her own table??”
This is a question that in this day and age should not exist but here we are: Saba Azad asks are we still living in the dark ages after she is denied work because of her relationship with Hrithik Roshan.
